Sacramento
Directed by Michael Angarano, Sacramento follows Michael Cera’s Glenn as he reluctantly agrees to accompany one-time friend Rickey (Angarano) on a road trip to the title locale. Filmmaker Angarano, armed with his and Chris Smith’s screenplay, delivers a very low-key, very quirky comedy that unfolds slowly (and methodically) over its 89 minutes, and there’s little doubt, certainly, that the picture benefits from its assortment of above-average performances – with, in particular, Cera offering up a memorable (and eye-opening) turn as a milquetoast protagonist saddled with some serious rage-control issues. And while the movie’s subdued atmosphere ultimately prevents it from becoming as continuously captivating as Angarano has surely intended, Sacramento, which boasts a handful of agreeably heartfelt interludes, ultimately comes off as a hit-and-miss endeavor that is, for the most part, more the former than the latter.
