Kinda Pregnant
Directed by Tyler Spindel, Kinda Pregnant details the various complications ensue after Amy Schumer’s Lainy Newton decides to fake a pregnancy. It’s a larger-than-life premise that is, for the most part, employed to genial, watchable effect by Spindel, as the filmmaker, armed with Schumer and Julie Paiva’s screenplay, delivers a relatively propulsive comedy that’s elevated by its raft of affable performances – with Schumer’s somewhat broad yet generally agreeable turn matched by a supporting cast that includes Chris Geere, Damon Wayans Jr., and Will Forte. (The latter, cast as Lainy’s down-to-earth love interest, offers up charismatic work that remains an ongoing highlight within the proceedings.) And although many of the picture’s jokes and gags fall hopelessly flat, Kinda Pregnant has been infused with a small handful of legitimately funny moments and set-pieces that ultimately carry it through to its heartwarming conclusion – with the end result a decent-enough endeavor that fares better than one might’ve anticipated (particularly when compared with some of its flabby comedic brethren).
