Insidious: Out of the Further
Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further follows a single mother (Amelia Eve’s Gemma) as she’s terrorized by a malevolent demon. Filmmaker Chase, armed with his own screenplay, delivers a predominantly tiresome (and progressively interminable) endeavor that contains few (if any) elements designed to capture and sustain the viewer’s interest, and it’s clear, certainly, that the picture fares especially poorly within its repetitive and hopelessly uninvolving first half – with the ongoing emphasis on the almost laughably underdeveloped protagonists’ spooky shenanigans certainly compounding the dull atmosphere. And while the picture admittedly does benefit from an appreciatively less-than-subtle turn by Sam Spruell as the aforementioned malevolent demon, Insidious: Out of the Further builds towards a goofy and completely anticlimactic final stretch that ensures it concludes on as underwhelming a note as one could envision – thus confirming the film’s place as the nadir of a decidedly erratic horror series.
