Heaven: To the Land of Happiness

Featuring an ultra-familiar road movie plot about two guys on the run from the mob and the cops, Heaven: To the Land of Happiness is aggressively by-the-numbers; all of the bonding, shenanigans, and melodrama that you’d expect from the road movie genre is here, with basically nothing to set it apart from the pack. There isn’t anything overtly wrong with it — Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il have fun chemistry, there are a handful of enjoyable set-pieces, and the whole thing is generally endearing enough. But its low-stakes familiarity makes it hard for the film to ever be much more than a mild diversion.
