Enough

Directed by Michael Apted, Enough follows Jennifer Lopez’s Slim as she and her young daughter (Tessa Allen’s Gracie) attempt to escape the clutches of Billy Campbell’s evil Mitch Hiller. It’s a solid premise that’s employed to slightly overlong yet mostly satisfying effect by Apted, as the filmmaker, armed with a script by Nicholas Kazan, delivers a pulpy thriller that boasts, at its core, a tremendously appealing performance from Lopez – with the actress’ charming, compelling efforts going a long way towards smoothing over the narrative’s periodic bumps and lulls. (Campbell’s deliciously smarmy turn as the vicious Mitch remains a highlight, as well, and Apted elicits strong work from a colorful periphery cast that includes Juliette Lewis, Noah Wyle, and Fred Ward.) And while the movie’s midsection is admittedly a touch on the repetitive side, Enough charges into a compelling and thoroughly satisfying third act that ensures it concludes on about as positive a note as one could envision – with the final result a better-than-average endeavor that strikes a decent balance between drama and salacious thrills.
