Though it’s not quite on the level of William Oldroyd’s impressive debut, Lady Macbeth, this was still an enjoyable film about a young woman in the ’60s who strikes up a friendship with the new doctor at the prison where she works. For the most part, the film is a stylish but overly slow-paced character study that’s buoyed by a couple of fantastic performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway. There is a point, however, where the film takes a turn (and the exact moment where this happens is absolutely delightful); everything from this point on is thoroughly electrifying (though it’s easy to wish that this had happened much earlier in the film).
