David Byrne’s American Utopia
An above-average concert film, David Byrne’s American Utopia documents the former Talking Heads frontman’s 2019 Broadway show, which was itself based on his album and tour of the same name. Filmmaker Spike Lee delivers a briskly-paced endeavor that effectively (and consistently) allows Byrne and his musicians ample opportunity to shine, and it’s clear, too, that the predictably creative production design goes a long way towards perpetuating the compelling atmosphere. Lee’s subdued directorial choices ensure that the captivating music remains front and center throughout – the group’s performance of the Talking Heads hit “Once in a Lifetime” is certainly a highlight, ultimately – although it’s worth noting that the filmmaker has peppered the proceedings with a handful of eye-popping shots and sequences. (The closing credits, for example, allow the picture to end on an impressively exuberant note.) Lee’s personality is undoubtedly at the forefront during a moving and downright emotional cover of Janelle MonĂ¡e’s “Hell You Talmbout,” and there’s little doubt, ultimately, that David Byrne’s American Utopia earns a place for itself within cinema’s greatest concert documentaries.
