Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen
Directed by Sara Sugarman, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen follows Lindsay Lohan’s Lola as she attempts to adjust to her new life in the suburbs of New Jersey. Filmmaker Sugarman, working from Gail Parent’s screenplay, delivers a slight, mostly forgettable comedy that’s seemingly been geared exclusively towards young girls, as the movie, which at least progresses at a relatively brisk clip, has been suffused with a lighter-than-gossamer feel that’s reflected in its myriad of superficial elements – including one-dimensional characters and an ongoing emphasis on far-from-interesting conflicts and encounters. The arms-length atmosphere does, as a result, persist for the duration of the movie’s short-yet-not-short-enough running time, and while Sugarman has peppered the proceedings with some admittedly stylish visuals (eg a couple of striking split-diopter shots), Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, despite Lohan’s personable efforts, builds towards a fairly intolerable climactic stretch that ensures it concludes on a decidedly unimpressive note – with the final result a terminally over-the-top endeavor that contains little in the way of memorable attributes.
