The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw
It’s the slowest of slow burns, but The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw does a pretty decent job of establishing an eerie sense of escalating dread and impending doom, which is enough to keep the film (mostly) engaging. About a woman and her daughter, suspected of witchcraft by the neighbouring small town, and the creepiness that ensues, the film features some nice low-key style from Thomas Robert Lee and great performances all around. Interestingly, the movie is set in the 1970s but may as well be set in the 19th century; though the isolated community in question is never specially referred to as Amish, they live a similarly technology-free lifestyle. I’m not sure this particularly adds anything, but it’s interesting nonetheless. The movie is definitely slower than it needs to be, but the compelling characters and above average performances go a long way towards making it as watchable as it is.
