The Book of Solutions
The Book of Solutions, with its lower-key sensibilities, feels like a definite departure for Michel Gondry, who’s mostly known for his out-there narratives and audacious style. It’s about a director who’s misunderstood by basically everyone around him, so it feels like it must be a personal film for the man. Alas, it doesn’t particularly work. The biggest issue is the insufferable main character, who’s actually a pretty big drag to have to spend the whole movie with (if Gondry has based this character on himself… oof). The film certainly has its charms, but I was very much ready for it to be over by the end of its draggy 102 minute running time.
