Stellar: A Magical Ride

About a guy who finds himself being pursued by his mobster boss in his dad’s broken down old taxi, Stellar: A Magical Ride is fun in parts, but mostly doesn’t particularly work. It’s ostensibly an action comedy, but it’s clear that director Kwon Soo-Kyung has no real interest in the action part of the equation; there are a handful of fights and car chases, but they’re all perfunctory and brief. The film is mostly concerned with being a goofy comedy, and on that level, it’s affable enough. But its attempts to weave drama in with the laughs never quite lands, leading to a whole bunch of third act melodrama that feels completely unearned.
