Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows scrappy teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he gains superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, with the movie, in addition to detailing Miles’ initial efforts at coping with his newfound abilities, revolving around Miles’ interactions with heroes’ from a variety of different dimensions (including John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham and Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir). It’s a decent premise that’s employed to consistently (and disheartening) underwhelming effect by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, as the directors deliver yet another tedious origin story that’s been augmented with a whole host of unappealing elements – with the most obvious and aggressively in-your-face example of this, surprisingly enough, the headache-inducing animation style. In their efforts at replicating the appearance of a comic book, the filmmakers have cultivated an unpleasant atmosphere that’s riddled with questionable instances of over-the-top style (including a baffling decision to blur the backgrounds, forcing one to occasionally wonder if they accidentally stepped into a 3D screening). Beyond that, though, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse suffers from an all-over-the-place, seemingly endless midsection that contains almost nothing for the viewer to embrace or enjoy – which is a shame, really, given that the picture boasts a raft of exceedingly entertaining voice performances. By the time the exhausting and absolutely interminable climax rolls around, however, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has certainly cemented its place as an uncommonly ill-advised animated endeavor that, extraordinarily enough, fares even worse than most live-action comic-book movies.

  1. You are officially one of the dumbest critics ever. This is not a critique of the movie this is trolling. Remove your stupid review from Rotten Tomatoes.

  2. Everybody is entitled to their opinions but DAAAAAMN this is painful to read. It’s like we watched two completely different movies. Because the one I saw was both visually amazing and inspiring but also had a refreshingly witty character to its dialogue and storytelling.. They took pretty much ALL of the known spiderman versions and wove them into one awesome and coherent story that revisions old favorites and births a brand new one. Come on dude that is amazing! It also started slow and worked it’s way up into a furious and intense pace. It got me laughing, my heart was pumping at times, it was heartfelt.. Goes to show just how much people’s opinions can vary. I absolutely loved it and will be going back to see it again in 3D. Rip my eyeballs.

  3. Writing one terrible, half-assed sad excuse for a paragraph does not constitute a review. At no point during your rambling do I get any idea of what this movie was or even what you actually thought of it. This is a very clear attempt at being a contrarian troll and it isn’t even an amusing attempt at that.

Stop wasting your time doing this and get an actual job. You are genuinely a sad and pathetic person making the world a worse place.

  4. I feel really bad that you can’t seem to find enjoyment from any superhero movie that isn’t directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It must be really tough to only like bad movies, especially in your line of work.

  5. I like most superhero movies and love the fact that I can see my childhood heroes on big screen. This one however is unbelievably overrated. It was like a bad Doctor Who episode for children with ADHD and crack cocaine. The multiverse idea was fine but it is amazing how little juice they were able to squeeze from it. The story got nowhere and everything was just empty, boring and predictable. Nearly all the villains and Spiders were totally wasted. Who asked for a fourth Spider-man origin story anyways?

Worst movie I’ve seen since Ready Player One.

  6. This Critic gave The Lovely Bones 4/4 need I say more?

  7. I’ve found pleasure in reading reviews that are much longer than yours, but somehow, yours was way more exhausting to read through. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own voice and own opinions, I definitely believe so, but yours is just so misplaced, and everything you’ve said almost made it seem as if you either watched a completely different movie than everyone else, OR… you’re just a bitter and tasteless poor fool who enjoys nothing more than to disagree with the rest of the world.

  8. Oh my gosh, finally! Someone who agrees! I feel like I’ve been taking crazy pills because everyone was losing their minds about this movie but I sat there with a headache and I laughed exactly once. The animation was physically painful to watch, the characters were not actually that fleshed out, and the story wasn’t as unique as people are making it out to be. It was nowhere near the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but I just don’t understand all the hyperbole going around. “It’s the best superhero movie of 2018!” It’s not. “We finally have a fresh take on a superhero story!” Did you miss basically every single other superhero movie of the last decade?

There may be some who genuinely love it and that’s awesome (I’m all for letting people enjoy things), but I think that the mere act of seeing a 99% on RT has blinded some people from watching this movie with their own eyes and forming their own opinions. The friend who recommended this to me said “It’s amazing!” and I asked “What’s amazing about it?” He responded with “It has a super high rating and it’s winning awards.” Like, dude. That’s not your opinion, that’s you regurgitating other people’s opinions. I told that same friend that I didn’t like the animation and he scoffed in my face, as if I has just insulted the most ancient gods of animated movies.

Other people can watch it as much as they want, but I personally don’t think I’ll be watching it again. There were things I liked, but the flaws were just too glaring for me to call it amazing

This is really funny all the haters obviously do not understand the full lore behind the spider Man series and how significant Miles Morales is to the story. Also the Recent Spiderman game connects Miles to the Spider Man universe in an even better way than the movie, people are not understanding the message behind the movie and its irritating. I thought having the main Spider Man die and Miles taking his place was such a twist and it also leaves room for the next movie where Miles has to deal with epic villians that Spider Man has fought in the past. With Miles not having that much experience and not being used to the Spidey lifestyle, who the fck is dumb enough to think the story line sucked. Man fck yall

  10. You are simply a mean-spirited troll. This movie was perfect. Anyone who actually trusts your opinion on which movies to see is missing all decent movies while you review movies from 40 years ago as if they are relevant.

    • The fact he’s tomato proved is bullshit. It’s okay for someone to disagree but he writes like a child. I see independent movie goers that have more to say than him. Hiroshima Mon Amour was out in 1959 and had 100% until he recently put his garbage stamp on it. And he reviewed Shoplifters and Strangelove negatively but what’s worse is the way he writes. I’ve tried getting him removed from RT because of this and hopefully one day he will be. Until then, we all can watch this train wreck.

  11. It’s odd that this animated film keeps winning awards specifically for their original artistic animation style…

  12. “fares even worse than most live-action comic-book movies.” This right here is what made me realize you weren’t even a critic. You just hate comic book movies. This has become a new thing for your critics to do. MCU, DC, or SONY…you all just want them to be over so you can…I don’t know…make it big as a critic NOT doing comic book movies. But the thing is, these movies keep you bottom feeders alive. You should embrace them.

  13. Your review is universally hated. An Oscar winning movie and you talk trash about it. This is by far one of the best superhero movies out there. Why do you hate it?

  14. One of my habits is to go through reviews of movies I have just seen looking for people that loved it and people that hated it to help my feelings about a movie congeal into words. Some critics can say it so well that they literally can tell me how I feel about a movie, and that is a pretty special and amazing ability to have. I have to say however that I didn’t get one single word from this reviewer’s paragraph stick to me for more than a couple seconds. It seemed like a vapid and empty snarl of a review that even seemed venomous in its attempt to sieve out and deflate the high that I am feeling after having just watched this movie.

If you are being paid to literally be a kill joy and a troll then I want the company that is paying you to write reviews like this to fold, because if someone told me that company was a subsidiary owned by the King Pin I would probably believe them.

  15. Your review on movies is trash…….. Not only did this movie expand the idea of traditional 3D animation, but the writing and characters had me hooked and actually feeling emotion for each one (even the pig). Please do everyone a favor and stop reviewing movies.
