Baby: The Secret Diary of a Mom to Be

Baby: The Secret Diary of a Mom to Be is fine. It’s pretty much the dictionary definition of fine. It’s perfectly acceptable, but not much more than that. About how a couple prepares when they find out they’re going to have a baby, the premise is not particularly fresh, putting it mildly, and there’s nothing here we haven’t seen before in countless movies or TV shows about impending parenthood; the couple’s relationship is tested and their quirky friends are consulted in all the ways you’d expect. It’s the type of movie that asks absolutely nothing of the viewer — it’s content to be 94 minutes of pleasant white noise. Luk Yee-Sum’s direction is thoroughly style-free, and the whole thing is never quite as compelling as you’d like, but it’s also never boring. It’s fine! It’s too bad that travel isn’t really a thing anymore, because this is a movie that feels tailor-made to be watched while you drift in and out of sleep on a plane.
