About last night…
Directed by Edward Zwick, About last night… details the ups and downs of a romantic relationship that ensues between two successful professionals (Rob Lowe’s Danny Martin and Demi Moore’s Debbie Sullivan). Filmmaker Zwick, armed with a script by Tim Kazurinsky and Denise DeClue, delivers a smart, funny romantic comedy that benefits from its memorable dialogue and surfeit of compelling performances, as, in terms of the latter, Zwick elicits compelling work from his two leads and a supporting cast that includes Elizabeth Perkins and James Belushi. (Moore’s commanding, lived-in efforts certainly stand as the movie’s most potent weapon, while Lowe, charming as he often is, generally seems to be out of his depth by comparison.) And although the picture’s 113 minute running time does result in a small handful of lulls, particularly within the third act’s protracted (and expected) fake break-up section, About last night… generally comes off as a better-than-average romcom that boasts (and succeeds as a result of) an edge often absent from pictures of this ilk.
