Kelce

Directed by Don Argott, Kelce follows professional football player Jason Kelce as he navigates his way through the 2022-2023 NFL season – with a particular emphasis placed on Jason’s efforts at deciding if he should retire and his eventual confrontation with brother Travis Kelce at the Super Bowl. Filmmaker Argott delivers a fairly standard documentary that does an effective job, for the most part, of sustaining the interest of football neophytes, as Argott generally devotes a good amount of screentime to Kelce’s off-the-field exploits alongside his wife and two young daughters – which ensures, certainly, that Kelce eventually becomes a sympathetic, compelling figure. It’s equally clear, however, that Kelce‘s ongoing emphasis on its subject’s football-related exploits, particularly in the protracted, Super Bowl-focused final stretch, diminishes its overall impact, and it seems clear, in the final analysis, that the picture has been designed to appeal predominantly to fans of either football or Kelce himself – although it’s ultimately impressive just how watchable the film remains for the duration of its 103 minutes.
